Mr Jeff is an award-winning singer-songwriter, educator and multi-instrumentalist from Ohio, USA. His new album, I've Got Heart, is quite superb, featuring twelve inspirational and thought-provoking songs. The album is beautifully sung and exquisitely produced, showcasing an impressive array of talent, including Flor Bromley, Snooknuk and Kymberly Stewart. The album takes an ambitious and inclusive approach, with even Mr Jeff's family getting in on the action, contributing both vocals and artwork. Musically, the album experiments with a variety of genres, including indie, pop, rock, big band and even Latin music. Here, sublime melody meets lyrical dexterity, culminating in a collection that celebrates courage, kindness, perseverance and, above all, the importance of simply having FUN.
The album kicks off with the uplifting title track, 'I've Got Heart', a song about resilience that draws the listener in from the outset. Catchy and infectious, it's a superb introduction to an album that promises so much more to come. The interplay between the vocals is truly charming, as we're treated to a host of positive affirmations, accompanied by an almost Beatles-influenced brass section powering away in the background. This is a song for all seasons, celebrating the endless possibilities of life and encouraging us to do our best and "put all my energy into what I do". Above all, it cultivates important values such as kindness, self-belief and empathy, reminding us that we are enough and should always "stand up" for what we believe in.
And while we're on the subject of music with a message, there are plenty more songs that adopt a similar approach. The dynamic 'Patience' emphasises the importance of perseverance and how, although patience can sometimes be difficult, seeing things through can ultimately pay huge dividends. Some enthralling guitar work on the chorus adds further flavour to an incredibly catchy song that glistens and shines throughout.
In a similar vein, 'Show Up, Work Hard' highlights the importance of getting involved, pursuing your dreams and sticking with whatever you're doing. If success in show business is ninety-nine per cent about showing up, then this song is right on the money. A slightly dreamy affair, it transports the listener into a world of blistering guitar work, scintillating harmonies and a luscious melody. "All your dreams can come true from the work you do" is the underlying message, delivered with some truly breathtaking vocal harmonies.
'You Can Do Anything' adopts a similar approach, celebrating the rewards of persistence through the triumphant declaration of "I did it", because "I can do anything". It's an especially relevant message in a world where perhaps too many young people are encouraged to chase fleeting online fame rather than pursue more meaningful ambitions. Crunching guitars, along with a chiming, almost Edge-like guitar sound, provide plenty of additional dynamics. The lyrics also explore the importance of achievement, demonstrating how overcoming difficult challenges can be immensely rewarding. The message is straightforward and easy to understand: success doesn't always come easily, but the satisfaction of getting there makes the effort worthwhile.
My favourite song on the album is 'Threenager', a roller coaster ride that captures the various moods of a three-year-old, who amid the self-inflicted chaos is advised to simply 'take a breath'. Here, crunching guitars collide with the kind of keyboards The Cars were experimenting with back in the day. The song moves seamlessly from one riff to another, punctuated by an ambitious rhythm section before settling into a more restrained bridge that offers a moment of reflection. It's a terrific track, providing plenty of musical twists and turns along the way.
The album also features a number of educational and instructive songs. 'Daylight Saving' provides information about this sometimes-contentious subject, encouraging us to make the most of the extra daylight by jumping out of bed and seizing the moment. Here, time is presented as something of a musical mystery waiting to be investigated. Alternatively, 'What Is Indigo' shifts gears, exploring the world of colour and celebrating this exotic shade in all its glory. Musically, it has a minimalist funk vibe, wrapped up in an unmistakable eighties flavour.
'Keep Swimming' is an uplifting track, guaranteed to hit the spot, with a cool percussive beat that keeps the listener engaged throughout. Lyrically, we're informed that we can "go far" if we "keep swimming", and that, in doing so, we'll ultimately get "better and better". It's an irresistible slice of optimism for the modern age, reminding us that if we can learn to change our mindset, things are sure to work out fine. The song also features additional vocals from the wonderful Snooknuk, who delivers her own unique brand of velvety vocals in the way only she can.
Flor Bromley makes her eagerly anticipated appearance on 'Compliment Sandwich', where wacky, feel-good affirmations are the order of the day. The music features an unmistakable Caribbean vibe, adding further charm to the proceedings, but it's the lyrics that really steal the show. The importance of genuine compliments, kindness and a generous spirit are all emphasised. There's a wonderful interplay between the two lead vocalists, who sound as though they're having a fabulous time delivering this heartfelt message. An inspirational song that deserves to be sung from the rooftops of every school across the planet.
'Welcome to the World' is a more restrained affair, with acoustic guitar taking centre stage as we're reminded that "the world is so much better now you're here". The joys of early parenthood are beautifully captured, along with the promise of great adventures to be shared together. The song also evokes a welcoming sense of safety and comfort, reassuring a newborn arriving into an uncertain world that they will be kept "safe and sound".
In a somewhat similar fashion, the album closes with 'I Will Take Good Care of You', where kindness, safety and protection are wrapped up in a velvet glove. The song benefits from an exquisite string section and some beautifully expressive piano work throughout. There's a certain mystique and heartfelt quality to the arrangement, while the lyrics remain precise and beautifully understated, culminating in the simple but powerful declaration: "I will take good care of you".
Well, Mr Jeff has certainly taken care of the listener, delivering a collection of uplifting, heartfelt songs where intricate arrangements meet inspiring lyrics without ever losing sight of the audience they're intended for. This is a superb piece of work, offering a wonderfully eclectic mix of styles and sounds, all swept along by the kind of melodies that only come along once in a while. Mr Jeff has truly delivered here, through the fusion of inspired melody, lyrical depth, and experimental genre. He has crafted an album that will no doubt reside in the imaginations of children both now and well into the future.
Mr Jeff – songs from the heart.
