Single Review: But You Did. – The Jackie Papers

'But You Did.' is the latest slice of perfect pop from the irrepressible band The Jackie Papers; a truly memorable song that celebrates kindness without asking for anything in return. In a world where everything seems to come with a price tag, that message feels genuinely valuable.

The lyrics emphasise how modern society can sometimes feel cold and lacking in courtesy, while reminding us of the power of small acts of kindness. Where a smile, a gentle nod, a simple moment of acknowledgement can mean far more than we often realise. The line 'when we share small things, we all have enough' perfectly captures the song’s generosity of spirit.

I also love the American post-punk vibe running throughout the track. You can almost imagine The Jackie Papers tearing up the stage at CBGBs in the late ’70s alongside perhaps Blondie or Talking Heads. Where, the laid-back almost detached vocal delivery, provides an interesting contrast to the heartfelt lyrics on display.

The song also features live instrumentation throughout, with every instrument played by the band. No AI shortcuts here, just a group of friends making music the old-fashioned way. Leaving the impression that spending a Saturday afternoon blasting away in a garage might still be one of life’s great pleasures.

The Jackie Papers continue to release timeless music that lands both emotionally and melodically. For me, they’re always right in the pocket — and the fact that kids love these songs too only proves one thing: great music is great music. Nuff said!

The Jackie Papers – everyone’s a winner.
